I’ve got the whole world in my hands

December 17, 2020

Reflection: Our children have so much to teach us.

Today, I’m grateful for: My son, Calvin

Challenge: Hug your babies real tight, and thank them for the role they play in your life. Not a mama? Go hug your own mom! And ask her what life lessons she learned from being your mother.

The way my son rests his sweet little head on my shoulder is sometimes enough to bring me to my knees. The sweetness of his touch, the tenderness of his heart, the innocence of his mind, all resting right there in my arms. And for the briefest moment, it feels as though our souls are connected.

And maybe they are? I mean, I did grow him with my body. And when I’m holding him, it feels as though I’ve got the whole world in my hands. When I look into his eyes, there are times I think he knows more than me about this grand world we live in. And it makes me wonder...is that what this is all about? We spend our first few years in the world unlearning the wisdom we were born with, and then spend the rest of our lives seeking to find the very wisdom we had all along? What is it about living in this world that robs us of the wisdom that is inherent in the depths of every babies eyes?

I call my son “my teacher” because I learn something from him everyday. Sure, there’s plenty of the “mom-skills” that come from our day-to-day interactions, but what I’m most grateful for is what he teaches me about myself. Our children are mirrors. They reflect back to us all the parts (good and not-so-good) that make us who we are. And when I witness traits in him that seem so inherent to who he is (patience, curiosity, wonder, joy) it’s the most obvious reminder of the things we all wish to be a little bit more like. You really can’t get a better life coach than a child!

Today, I’m grateful for my son, Calvin. For all the wisdom he brings. And for the light he shines in our life every single day. I love you, sweet boy.
