Creature comforts

February 18, 2021

Reflection: You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.

Today, I’m grateful for: creature comforts

Challenge: Think about the things in your life that make your life more comfortable.

As I witness the distress happening in the South, it brings back challenging memories from our own natural disasters here in the Midwest just 6 short months ago. The water pouring from ceilings leaves me reminiscent of the downpours and high winds that left homes flooded, roofs damaged and some of America’s greatest cornfields flattened. The lack of heat reminds me of powerless Iowans who went without air conditioning and were left with refrigerators full of spoiled food in the sweltering Midwest heat and humidity. And the homes and properties left littered, or worse, destroyed, from the trees and debris blown at dangerous speeds into homes and neighborhoods. Damage and debris that is still visible today.

My heart goes out to these folks suffering through these difficult times. We, of course, have to acknowledge that we are privileged to even live in a country that has access to these creature comforts. But living without them is a challenging experience.

Today, I’m grateful for the creature comforts that make our lives so much more comforting. Climate control, fresh water, electricity...the things we don’t miss much until they’re gone. Today, I choose to notice.
