Reflection: Living in the now can end suffering
Today, I’m grateful for: Tools to help support my gratitude practice
Challenge: Find your favorite quote that helps support your mental health. Paste it on your wall, mirror or inside a cabinet where you will see it frequently.
One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Eckhart Tolle. In his book, “The Rhythm of Life”, he says “Gratitude for the present moment and the fullness of life now is true prosperity.” I love this quote so much because it’s so simple, and yet packs so much wisdom.
“Gratitude”: a conscious expression of thankfulness that leads to a moment of bliss.
“for the present moment”: a reminder to live in the now. Not looking back to worry about the past. Not wasting the present worrying about the future. But to be here, now, indulging in each moment it has to offer.
“And the fullness of life now”: Try to think of a moment when you felt like your life wasn’t “full”....our lives are always full! And if we hone in on the beauty of those micro moments that make up our lives, we might just find peace, joy and bliss along the way.
“Is true prosperity”. I interpret this not only as it’s definition of “success”, but also to mean bliss, nirvana, or peace.
Pull these phrases together and you have some deep words of wisdom. I meditate on this phrase frequently. I even have a sign in my room with it as a reminder because this conscious practice of gratitude isn’t easy. But it’s so worth it. It helps to take the fear, worry, and anxiety out of those micro moments. It helps me to STOP sucking the joy out of the right now because I’m so worried about the future. And it helps me to let go of the past traumas that no longer serve me. And for that, I am grateful.
