Affirmations

January 12, 2021

Reflection: Positive self-talk comes in many forms.

Today, I'm grateful for: small reminders that make me feel worthy.

Challenge: How can you give yourself some love this week?

I'm the type of person who responds well to continuous affirmation. I need that reassurance. I need to know I'm loved, worthy and valued. Right or wrong, this is something I know about myself, which helps me to ask for that emotional support when I need it. Obviously I don't have control over how those in my life respond to my emotional needs. But what I do have control over is what I choose to engage in and how it supports (or hinders) my emotional health. Here's a couple reflections I've had in regards to this:

  • Social media is tricky: I've found positives and negatives with my engagement with social media. On one hand, it offers connectivity during a time of isolation. And also offers affirmations of positivity and inspirational perspectives on topics of interest. On the other hand, it's become a bit of a mindless habit that's also full of negativity and shaming. I'd like to continue to challenge my relationship with social media throughout this year.

  • Affirmations don't have to come from humans: I've fairly recently come to love an app called I am. It sends positive affirmations at random intervals throughout your day. Things like "I am happy to be here" and "I focus on what I love and draw it to me." Even though there isn't a real person on the other side of that affirmation, it offers me an opportunity to pause throughout the day, and meditate on those words.

  • It's my job to make others around me feel just as loved as I desire to feel: If I'm feeling the need to be affirmed. There are probably others around me who would benefit from an 'atta boy (or girl!). My husband, my son, my family, my colleagues, my friends! I'm a firm believer in sharing the love, even when you're not feeling it yourself.

Today, I'm feeling grateful for small reminders that make me feel loved, even if they come from a smart phone app! And when all else fails, a little positive self-talk into the mirror never hurt anyone. I'm forever-inspired by this little girl:
