A handy husband

Reflection: Slow and steady wins the race

Today, I'm grateful for: a handy husband

Challenge: What special skills does your significant other have that you appreciate? Have you told them lately?

When we built our house about 4 years ago, we decided to keep the basement unfinished for the time being. Mostly out of a matter of cost, and the fact that we didn't need the space at that time. But we knew eventually, we would finish it out. As our family grew, so did our need for more space. So...."eventually" has finally come.

My husband and I have done our fair share of DIY home reno projects. Out first home was a little fixer-upper, and we tackled everything from tiled floors, to plumbing installs to completely renovating the kitchen. BUT a basement finish is a whole new ballgame. And a "1950s fixer-upper with old school charm" is quite a bit different from a brand new modern install. Not to mention all the codes and requirements that come along with a newer home.

Don't get me wrong, these, of course, are all good problems to have. But it makes for a slow and tedious cycle of research, planning, design, execution...oh and about 10 trips to the local home improvement store per week. Despite the slow process, I know it'll be worth it in the end. We've already learned so much along the way...Make no mistake, when I say "we", I mostly mean my husband. Gone are the days of our dynamic-duo approach of tackling home improvement projects. Our weekends typically consist of Dan in the basement and me upstairs caring for Calvin. I offer consultation, design-decisions....and on the rough days, emotional support. But he does the majority of the heavy-lifting.

Today, I'm grateful for my husband's resilience and determination to provide us with a wonderful space for our family. I witness him day-after-day, weekend-after-weekend, overcoming challenges, giving it his all to provide our family with a beautiful space that we can make our own. It's wild to be on this side of the process after having built our home just a few years ago. There's lots that's been completed, but still lots to go. I'm so proud of the work he's done already, I'm so excited for this space to become a part of our home, and I'm so grateful for a handy husband who's never afraid to get his hands dirty.
